Samsung today announced the launch of a new SmartThing feature. It is called SmartThings Find and allows its users to quickly locate their Galaxy devices using the app. Have you lost your device or can't remember where you left it? Once registered, all you have to do is open SmartThings Find on your smartphone or tablet and select a misplaced device. When your device is located on a map, you can find it via either sound notification or the AR-based Search Nearby feature. SmartThings Find is available on Galaxy smartphones and tablets running Android 8 or later, Galaxy Watch devices running Tizen 5.5 or later, and Galaxy Buds+ and Galaxy Buds Live. The feature uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and ultra-wideband (UWB) technologies.
Moreover, you will be able to find your device even if it is offline. Every user of SmartThings can opt in to help other users find their devices.
In this case, to locate your device, you need to report it as lost using SmartThings Find. Once the device has been offline for 30 minutes, it starts sending a BLE signal to nearby devices. The nearby Galaxy devices that decided to help in finding lost devices will be able to notify you of the location of your device through the Samsung server. Nobody will find out the location of the device except its user as all user data of SmartThings Find is encrypted and protected.
In the future, Samsung plans to expand the capabilities of SmartThings Find so that users can find not only Galaxy devices but also other important things using tracking tags.
