Samsung retained the title of the largest smartphone brand in terms of sales worldwide in Q3 2020. In addition, while the global smartphone market shrank by 5.7%, the company's Q3 sales rose 2.2% over the same period last year. According to a new report from Gartner, Samsung managed to sell 80.8 million smartphones in the third quarter of 2020, accounting for 22% of the global smartphone market.
Huawei ranked second in the global smartphone market, despite the decline in sales by as much as 21.3% compared to the third quarter of 2019. Such a dramatic difference is not surprising, as Huawei's market share has been declining sharply since the US imposed sanctions on the company. Now its market share worldwide is 14.1%. Xiaomi ranked third with smartphone sales amounting to 44.4 million units in the third quarter of 2020, which is 34.9% more than last year. The company's market share increased to 12.1%, while in the third quarter of 2019, Xiaomi's market share was only 8.5%. Apple ranked fourth in the global smartphone market with 40.5 million units sold in the third quarter of 2020. Its market share was only 11.1%. OPPO ranked fifth with 29.8 million smartphones sold and a market share of 8.2%.
The launch of the Galaxy Note 20 series, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, and the Galaxy Z Fold 2 brought Samsung very good financial results in Q3 2020. Strong demand for the Galaxy A series have also contributed to the increase in sales. Samsung became the leader in the third quarter of 2020 in the US, Russia, India, and the EMEA region. The company's market share is expected to decline in the fourth quarter of 2020 due to the launch of the iPhone 12 series.
